Spring Has Sprung FOR Asphalt Roofs But NOT For Metal!

It's true - there are so many worries and thoughts a homeowner must consider as Spring begins to come out of the ugly seasonal harshness of Winter.

Winter can be hard on a home, so spring cleaning shouldn't just be about organizing the infamous junk drawer and clearing out old boxes filled with things you do not use anymore. As the weather gets warmer, and you start to head outside to work in the yard, don't neglect your ROOF. Catching potential roof issues and fixing roof problems early, could save you money, and a headache, down the road. AGAIN, if you have an asphalt roof - Another Great Reason to Consider Replacing Your Roof with a Stone Coated Metal Roof today!

But here is your Spring Roof To Do List!

1. Clean Roof Surface: Remove any debris that has collected on the roof shingles during the winter. This debris can trap moisture, which can lead to mold, moss, and other unwanted growths on your roof. This type of roof debris increases the risk of water leaks and other damage, too. Debris can also add unnecessary weight to a roof shingle. You can use a rake or air blower to remove natural debris, but be careful not to damage the roof shingles when you walk on them.

2. Inspect Roof Shingles: Not all roof damage is visible from the ground, so be sure to pull out the ladder, climb up, and carefully inspect your roofing shingles. Look for roofing shingles that are cracking, missing, or curling. It is most important to repair or replace damaged roof shingles to avoid leaks from occurring or developing damage to your roof or the interior of your home from the outside in. If you see large areas of damaged roofing shingles, it may be time to call a professional roofer to repair or replace your roof. While inspecting your roof, check your flashing and  chimney for any potential damage.

3. Clean Gutters - Even If You Have Gutter Protection: Cleaning out gutters each spring could help you avoid costly repairs. Gutter protection can get damaged so it is important to do a visual for any issues. Fall and winter seasons bring leaves and other debris that collects on roof tops, which eventually wash into the gutters. Clogged gutters cannot properly drain rainwater, leading to overflowing gutters, which could eventually harm the foundation of your home. While cleaning and removing debris, check for rust, loose sections, and any signs of damage to the gutters. When cleaning your gutters, be sure your ladder is stable and use a tool of some type to hand to scoop out debris. Also, be sure all downspouts are clear of debris and leaves before the task is complete.

4. Trim Surround Trees: Trimming the trees typically has a holiday ring to it, but regular tree maintenance is a vital point in protecting your home no matter what type of roof you have. Mature, fully developed trees can provide shade and improve the overall curb appeal of your home, but large trees too close to your home can present large risks if left alone too long. If too massive, find a local professional tree company to trim back large branches away from your home. It is highly recommended tree branches should never touch your home. Branches can scratch and loosen roof shingles, and ultimately damage your roof and shorten the overall life of the asphalt roof.
